Tennessee onions better than onion rings

Posted on November 5, 2025 by Admin
Here’s a detailed Tennessee Onions recipe, often called “better than onion rings” because it’s cheesy, baked, and melts in your mouth without deep frying.

Ingredients (serves 4–6)

  • 3–4 large sweet onions (Vidalia recommended), peeled and cut into ½‑inch thick rings

  • 4 Tbsp (½ stick) unsalted butter, cut into small pieces

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder (optional: Italian seasoning or oregano)

  • Salt & black pepper to taste

  • Cheese topping:

    • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

    • 1 cup shredded mozzarella or Monterey Jack

    • ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven: 350 °F (175 °C). Grease a 9×13‑inch baking dish.

  2. Arrange onions: Place onion rings in a single layer in the prepared dish.

  3. Season: Sprinkle garlic powder, onion powder (or Italian seasoning), salt, and pepper over the onions.

  4. Add butter: Scatter butter pieces evenly over the seasoned onions.

  5. Add cheese: Sprinkle cheddar and mozzarella/Monterey Jack evenly, then top with Parmesan.

  6. Bake: 35–40 minutes, until onions are tender and cheese is melted and golden.

    • Optional: Broil 1–2 minutes at the end for extra crispy top.

  7. Rest: Let sit 5 minutes before serving so it sets slightly.

Tips & Variations

  • Use sweet onions (Vidalia, Walla Walla) for natural sweetness.

  • For extra flavor, sprinkle red pepper flakes or smoked paprika.

  • Can be served as a side or as a topping for burgers or sandwiches.

  • Make-ahead: slice and season onions in advance; add cheese and bake when ready.

This dish is rich, cheesy, and melts in your mouth, making it a great alternative to traditional fried onion rings.

If you want, I can provide a metric version of this recipe and a lighter cheese or lower-carb version too.
