🍗 Smothered Turkey Wings Recipe
Ingredients
For the turkey wings:
-
3–4 large turkey wings (split at the joints)
-
2 tbsp olive oil or butter
-
1 tbsp seasoning salt (like Lawry’s)
-
1 tbsp garlic powder
-
1 tbsp onion powder
-
1 tsp smoked paprika
-
1 tsp black pepper
-
1 tsp poultry seasoning (optional)
-
½ tsp cayenne or chili powder (optional for heat)
For the gravy:
-
1 medium onion, sliced
-
1 green bell pepper, sliced (optional)
-
2 cloves garlic, minced
-
3 tbsp all-purpose flour
-
2½ cups chicken or turkey broth (preferably low sodium)
-
1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce (optional)
-
Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
1. Season and brown the wings
-
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
-
Clean and pat turkey wings dry.
-
Rub them with olive oil and all the dry seasonings.
-
In a large skillet, sear the wings on medium-high heat until golden brown on both sides (about 3–4 minutes per side).
-
This step locks in flavor and helps the gravy develop richness.
-
2. Make the gravy
-
Remove wings and set aside.
-
In the same pan, add sliced onions, bell peppers, and garlic. Sauté until soft and fragrant.
-
Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes, stirring constantly to form a roux.
-
Gradually add broth, stirring until smooth.
-
Season with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce.
3. Smother and bake
-
Pour gravy over the browned wings in a baking dish.
-
Cover tightly with foil.
-
Bake for 2½ to 3 hours, until wings are fork-tender and the gravy is thick and flavorful.
4. Serve
Serve over rice, mashed potatoes, or cornbread dressing with a side of collard greens or green beans.
