🥬 Slow Cooker Cabbage

Slow-cooked cabbage is a tender, flavorful side dish that’s easy to prepare and perfect for comforting meals. Cooking it in a slow cooker lets the flavors meld without constant attention.


🛒 Ingredients (serves 4–6)

  • 1 medium head green cabbage, chopped or sliced
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 2–3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • 1 cup vegetable or chicken broth
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • Optional: ½ tsp paprika, 1 tsp caraway seeds, or 2–3 strips of cooked bacon

  1. Prepare cabbage and onion: Remove tough outer leaves and chop cabbage into wedges or slices. Slice onion.
  2. Layer in slow cooker: Place onion and garlic at the bottom, then add cabbage on top.
  3. Season: Drizzle with olive oil or dot with butter. Sprinkle salt, pepper, and optional spices.
  4. Add liquid: Pour broth over the cabbage to keep it moist.
  5. Cook:
    • LOW: 5–6 hours
    • HIGH: 2–3 hours
      The cabbage should be tender but not mushy.
  6. Optional: Stir in cooked bacon or a splash of apple cider vinegar for extra flavor before serving.

  • As a side with roast pork, chicken, or sausage
  • Mixed into mashed potatoes for extra flavor

  • For extra flavor, sauté onions and garlic in butter before adding to the slow cooker.
  • Avoid overcooking if you want the cabbage to retain some texture.
  • Green cabbage can be swapped with Savoy or red cabbage for variation; adjust cooking time slightly.
