sliced red apples

Posted on February 15, 2026 by Admin

If you’re using sliced red apples for an upside-down cake, here’s a simple and delicious way to do it 🍎

Apple Upside-Down Cake (with Red Apples)

Best apples to use

Firm red varieties work best because they hold their shape:

  • Honeycrisp apple
  • Fuji apple
  • Gala apple

(Soft apples may turn mushy.)

Ingredients

Topping

  • 1/4 cup (60g) butter
  • 1/2 cup (100g) brown sugar
  • 2 red apples, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon (optional)

Cake Batter

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup (100g) sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) milk
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) melted butter or oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Melt butter in a 9-inch (23cm) round pan. Sprinkle brown sugar evenly over it.
  3. Arrange apple slices in overlapping circles. Sprinkle with cinnamon.
  4. Mix dry ingredients in one bowl.
  5. In another bowl, whisk egg, sugar, milk, butter/oil, and vanilla.
  6. Combine wet and dry ingredients.
  7. Pour batter gently over apples.
  8. Bake 35–40 minutes, until golden and a toothpick comes out clean.
  9. Cool 10 minutes, then carefully flip onto a plate.

Optional Add-Ins

  • A pinch of nutmeg or cardamom
  • Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • A drizzle of salted caramel after flipping

If you tell me what ingredients you already have, I can adjust this to match your kitchen exactly.
