Salisbury steaks with mushroom gravy

Here’s a simple and tasty way to make Salisbury steaks with mushroom gravy at home! I’ll break it down into the steaks and the gravy.

Ingredients

For the steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp oil (for frying)

For the mushroom gravy:

  • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

1. Make the steaks:

  1. In a bowl, mix ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper until combined.
  2. Shape the mixture into oval patties (about 4–6, depending on size).
  3. Heat oil in a skillet over medium heat. Brown the patties on both sides (about 3–4 minutes per side). They don’t need to be fully cooked yet—just browned.

2. Make the mushroom gravy:

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter. Add sliced mushrooms and cook until soft, about 5 minutes.
  2. Sprinkle flour over the mushrooms and stir for 1–2 minutes to make a roux.
  3. Slowly add beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
  4. Add Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Let it simmer until it thickens slightly (about 3–5 minutes).

3. Combine steaks and gravy:

  1. Return the browned steaks to the skillet with the gravy.
  2. Cover and simmer for 10–15 minutes until steaks are cooked through and gravy is thickened.

4. Serve:

  • Serve the Salisbury steaks hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or your favorite vegetables. Spoon extra mushroom gravy on top!

If you want, I can also give you a faster version in one skillet that’s perfect if you don’t want to wash many dishes.

Do you want me to do that?
