Salisbury steak with onion gravy

Posted on November 7, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy recipe—comforting, savory, and perfect for a hearty meal:

Ingredients (serves 4)

For the Steaks:

  • 1 lb (450g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil or vegetable oil

For the Onion Gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Salisbury steaks

  1. In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, chopped onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper.
  2. Shape the mixture into 4 oval patties.

2. Cook the steaks

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Sear the patties for 3–4 minutes per side until browned. Remove from skillet and set aside.

3. Make the onion gravy

  1. In the same skillet, melt butter.
  2. Add sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 8–10 minutes.
  3. Stir in flour and cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw taste.
  4. Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  5. Simmer for 5 minutes until gravy thickens. Season with salt and pepper.

4. Combine and simmer

  • Return the steaks to the skillet.
  • Simmer in the gravy for 10–15 minutes over low heat until the steaks are cooked through and flavors meld.

5. Serve

  • Serve hot with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, spooning onion gravy over the top.

Tips

  • Use a mix of beef and a little pork for juicier patties if desired.
  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the gravy while simmering.
  • Caramelizing onions slowly gives the best depth of flavor for the gravy.

I can also give a one-pan version that cooks the steaks entirely in the gravy for extra convenience.
