Salisbury steak with onion gravy

Posted on November 8, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic, hearty recipe for Salisbury Steak with Onion Gravy — rich, savory, and perfect with mashed potatoes or rice. 🍽️🥩

🥩 Ingredients (serves 4)

For the steaks:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef
  • ½ cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil (for frying)

For the onion gravy:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

🔪 Instructions

1. Make the patties

  • In a large bowl, combine ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, milk, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper.
  • Mix until just combined; do not overwork.
  • Shape into 4 oval patties.

2. Cook the patties

  • Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Brown patties 3–4 minutes per side. Remove and set aside (they’ll finish cooking in the gravy).

3. Make the onion gravy

  • In the same skillet, melt butter.
  • Add sliced onions and cook until soft and golden, about 5–7 minutes.
  • Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to form a roux.
  • Gradually whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  • Simmer for 3–5 minutes until gravy thickens.
  • Season with salt and pepper.

4. Combine and simmer

  • Return the patties to the skillet, spooning some gravy over them.
  • Reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer 10–15 minutes until patties are cooked through.

5. Serve

  • Spoon extra gravy and onions over the patties.
  • Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles.

💡 Tips

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of red wine to the gravy while simmering.
  • Use ground chuck for juicier patties.
  • Make it ahead: patties can be prepared and refrigerated; just cook in gravy when ready.

I can also give you a slow cooker version of Salisbury steak where the gravy is extra rich and everything cooks together for a hands-off meal. Do you want that version?
