Recipe for favorite church cake

Posted on March 5, 2026 by Admin

Here’s a delicious “Favorite Church Cake” recipe that’s classic at potlucks — often called Church Cake or Preacher Cake. It’s moist, flavorful, and easy to make for gatherings or Sunday dinners. (Samsung Food)

🍍 Classic Church Cake (Pineapple & Creamy Layer)

Ingredients

Cake Base

  • 1 box yellow (or butter) cake mix
  • 1 egg
  • ½ cup cold water or pineapple juice

Topping Layers

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 6 oz instant vanilla pudding
  • 3 cups milk (for the pudding)
  • 16 oz crushed pineapple (well drained)
  • 8 oz whipped topping, thawed (e.g., Cool Whip)

Instructions

  1. Bake the Cake
    • Preheat oven to 350 °F (175 °C).
    • Prepare the box cake mix with egg and cold water (or pineapple juice).
    • Pour batter into a greased 9×13″ pan and bake ~10–12 min until done.
    • Let cool completely. (Samsung Food)
  2. Make the Cream Layer
    • In a bowl, beat cream cheese until smooth.
    • In another bowl, whisk vanilla pudding mix with 3 cups milk.
    • Stir pudding into the cream cheese until smooth — this makes a rich, creamy layer. (Samsung Food)
  3. Assemble the Cake
    • Spread the cream layer evenly over cooled cake.
    • Drizzle drained crushed pineapple on top.
    • Spread whipped topping over everything. (Plowing Through Life)
  4. Chill & Serve
    • Refrigerate at least 1–2 hours so layers set and flavors meld.
    • Slice and serve cold — it’s refreshing and keeps well for parties. (Plowing Through Life)

🍽️ Tips & Variations

  • Nuts: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts on top for extra texture. (Margin Making Mom®)
  • Cool whip swap: You can increase whipped cream for a lighter topping. (Samsung Food)
  • Make ahead: It’s even better the next day after the flavors blend. (Plowing Through Life)

Would you like a version of this recipe that’s from scratch (no box mix) or a lighter/healthier variation? I can give you that too!
