🥟 Pierogi leniwe

Pierogi leniwe (literally “lazy dumplings”) are a traditional Polish dish made primarily from fresh farmer’s cheese. Despite the name, they’re not typical stuffed pierogi — instead, the dough and filling are mixed together, shaped, and boiled.

They’re similar to cottage cheese dumplings and are soft, tender, and slightly sweet.

Pierogi leniwe are a staple of Polish home cooking and are often compared to:

  • Kluski leniwe (another name for the same dish)
  • Varenyky (similar Eastern European dumplings)

🧀 Main Ingredients

  • Twaróg (Polish farmer’s cheese)
  • Eggs
  • Flour
  • Pinch of salt
  • Sometimes a bit of sugar

👩‍🍳 How They’re Made

  1. Mix cheese, egg, and flour into a soft dough.
  2. Roll into long ropes.
  3. Cut into diamond-shaped pieces.
  4. Boil until they float (about 2–3 minutes).

🍽 How They’re Served

Sweet version (most traditional):

  • Melted butter
  • Sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Sour cream

Savory version:

  • Butter and breadcrumbs
  • Fried onions

💡 Why “Lazy”?

Because unlike classic pierogi (like Pierogi ruskie), there’s no rolling and sealing individual dumplings — everything is mixed together.
