Oven rack in a bag

🧽 “Oven Rack in a Bag” Cleaning Trick

This is a popular low-effort way to deep-clean grimy oven racks with almost no scrubbing.

What You Need

  • Large trash bag (heavy-duty is best)
  • ½–1 cup household ammonia
  • Old towel or sponge
  • Gloves
  • Outdoor space or well-ventilated area

How It Works

Ammonia doesn’t “dissolve” the grease by touching it directly — the fumes loosen baked-on grime overnight, making it wipe off easily the next day.

Step-by-Step

  1. Take racks out of the oven.
  2. Place them inside a large trash bag.
  3. Pour in ammonia (don’t dilute).
  4. Seal the bag tightly.
  5. Leave it outside or in a garage overnight (8–12 hours).
  6. Open carefully (avoid inhaling fumes).
  7. Wipe clean — grime should slide off easily.
  8. Rinse thoroughly and dry.

⚠️ VERY Important Safety Warnings

  • Never mix ammonia with bleach (creates toxic gas).
  • Use only in a well-ventilated area.
  • Wear gloves.
  • Keep away from pets and kids.

Safer Alternatives (Less Harsh)

If you prefer to avoid ammonia:

🧼 1. Dishwasher Tablet Method

Soak racks in hot water with a dishwasher tablet and scrub lightly.

🛁 2. Bathtub + Baking Soda

Lay racks in the tub on a towel, cover with hot water + baking soda + dish soap, soak overnight.

Does It Really Work?

Yes — especially for heavy, baked-on grease. It’s one of the least-scrubbing methods, but you must respect the fumes.
