Old-fashioned family banana fudge

Posted on December 29, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a nostalgic Old-Fashioned Family Banana Fudge recipe—the kind that’s creamy, sweet, and tastes like it came from a handwritten recipe card 💛🍌

🍌 Old-Fashioned Banana Fudge

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk (whole milk is best)
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup mashed ripe bananas (about 1 large banana)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans), optional
  • Pinch of salt

Instructions

  1. Prepare pan
    • Butter an 8×8-inch pan or line with parchment paper.
  2. Cook fudge base
    • In a medium saucepan, combine sugar, milk, butter, mashed banana, and salt.
    • Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until mixture comes to a steady boil.
  3. Boil
    • Reduce heat slightly and continue boiling 8–10 minutes, stirring often, until thickened.
    • (Old-fashioned test: a drop in cold water should form a soft ball.)
  4. Finish
    • Remove from heat.
    • Stir in vanilla and nuts (if using).
    • Beat with a spoon for 1–2 minutes until the fudge starts to lose its glossy shine.
  5. Set
    • Pour into prepared pan.
    • Let cool completely at room temperature before cutting into squares.

Tips

  • Use very ripe bananas for the best flavor.
  • Don’t rush the boiling step—this is key to proper texture.
  • Store tightly covered at room temperature for up to 3 days.

If you’d like, I can also share a creamier “banana cream fudge” version or a no-boil shortcut recipe that still keeps that old-fashioned taste.
