Got you 🌱—here are a couple of easy, delicious okra recipes depending on your mood. Both avoid that dreaded sliminess 👀


Crispy Pan-Fried Okra (No Slime!)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb fresh okra, sliced into ½-inch pieces
  • 2 tbsp oil (vegetable or olive)
  • Salt & black pepper
  • Optional: garlic powder, paprika, cayenne

Instructions

  1. Wash okra and dry it really well (key step).
  2. Heat oil in a skillet over medium-high.
  3. Add okra in a single layer—don’t overcrowd.
  4. Season and cook without stirring for 3–4 minutes.
  5. Stir and cook another 5–7 minutes until browned and crisp.
  6. Adjust seasoning and serve hot.

Southern Fried Okra (Classic & Crunchy)

Ingredients

  • 1 lb okra, sliced
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • ½ cup cornmeal (or cornmeal + flour mix)
  • Salt & pepper
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. Toss okra in beaten egg.
  2. Coat with cornmeal seasoned with salt & pepper.
  3. Fry in 350°F (175°C) oil for 3–4 minutes until golden.
  4. Drain on paper towels and serve.

Pro Tips

  • High heat = less slime
  • Don’t salt okra until it hits the pan
  • Fresh, small okra works best
