Honey Chicken

Ingredients

For the chicken

  • 1 lb (450 g) boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

For the sauce

  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp ketchup (optional for color)
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, minced (optional)
  • 1 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tbsp water (slurry for thickening)

Optional garnish

  • Sesame seeds
  • Chopped green onions

Instructions

  1. Prepare the chicken
    • Season chicken pieces with salt and pepper.
    • Dip in beaten eggs, then coat with cornstarch.
  2. Fry the chicken
    • Heat oil in a skillet or wok over medium-high heat.
    • Fry chicken pieces until golden and cooked through (about 4–5 minutes per side). Remove and drain on paper towels.
  3. Make the sauce
    • In a separate pan, mix honey, soy sauce, vinegar, garlic, ginger, and ketchup.
    • Heat until slightly bubbling, then stir in cornstarch slurry.
    • Cook 1–2 minutes until sauce thickens.
  4. Combine
    • Toss fried chicken in the sauce until fully coated.
  5. Serve
    • Sprinkle with sesame seeds and chopped green onions if desired.
    • Serve over steamed rice or noodles.

Tips

  • For less frying, you can bake the chicken at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes instead.
  • Add vegetables like bell peppers or broccoli for a complete meal.
  • Adjust sweetness by adding more or less honey to taste.
