homestyle chicken noodle soup

Ahhh yes 😌🍲 homestyle chicken noodle soupβ€”the ultimate comfort food. Here’s a classic, cozy version that’s rich, flavorful, and perfect for any day you need a warm hug in a bowl.

Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup

Ingredients (6–8 servings)

  • 1 whole chicken (3–4 lbs) or 2–3 lbs bone-in chicken parts
  • 10 cups water or chicken broth
  • 2–3 medium carrots, sliced
  • 2–3 celery stalks, sliced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 3–4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tsp thyme (dried or 2 tsp fresh)
  • Salt & black pepper to taste
  • 6–8 oz egg noodles (or your favorite noodles)
  • Optional: parsley or dill for garnish

Instructions

  1. Cook the chicken
    • In a large pot, add chicken and water/broth.
    • Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer 45–60 minutes until chicken is tender.
    • Skim off foam occasionally for clear broth.
  2. Remove chicken
    • Let cool slightly, then shred meat off the bones. Discard bones and skin (or keep a few for extra flavor).
  3. Cook vegetables
    • Add carrots, celery, onion, garlic, bay leaves, thyme, salt, and pepper to the broth.
    • Simmer 15–20 minutes until veggies are tender.
  4. Add noodles
    • Stir in noodles and cook according to package instructions (usually 6–8 minutes) until tender.
  5. Return chicken
    • Add shredded chicken back to the pot. Taste and adjust seasoning.
  6. Finish
    • Remove bay leaves.
    • Garnish with fresh parsley or dill if desired.

Pro Tips

  • For richer broth: Roast the chicken first or use a mix of bones and meat.
  • Clearer broth: Strain through a fine sieve before adding vegetables.
  • Extra flavor: Add a splash of lemon juice or a teaspoon of soy sauce for depth.
  • Make ahead: Soup tastes even better the next day as flavors meld.

If you want, I can give a shortcut 30-minute version that’s almost as flavorful as the slow-simmered homestyle version but ready fast 😏.

Do you want me to do that?
