Homemade butter

Posted on December 28, 2025 by Admin

Making homemade butter is surprisingly easy and fun! You only need heavy cream and a little salt if you want salted butter. Here’s how to do it:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup heavy cream (preferably chilled)
  • Pinch of salt (optional, for salted butter)

Instructions

1. Whip the cream:

  • Pour the heavy cream into a stand mixer, hand mixer, or a large jar (if shaking by hand).
  • Beat or shake at medium-high speed. First, you’ll get whipped cream. Keep going!

2. Separate butter from buttermilk:

  • After a few more minutes, the whipped cream will start to clump and separate.
  • You’ll see a yellow solid (butter) and a thin liquid (buttermilk).

3. Strain and rinse:

  • Pour off the buttermilk (you can save it for pancakes or baking).
  • Place the butter in a bowl and rinse it under cold water, kneading it gently to remove excess buttermilk. This helps it last longer.

4. Add salt (optional):

  • If you want salted butter, mix in a pinch of salt to taste.

5. Store:

  • Shape the butter into a block or ball and store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for longer storage.

Tips:

  • Using cold cream helps it separate faster.
  • You can also add flavors like garlic, herbs, or honey for a flavored butter.

If you want, I can give a super quick method to make butter by just shaking cream in a jar in 5–10 minutes—it’s really fun and satisfying!

Do you want me to show that method?
