  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

Cooking Steps

1. Make the Hamburger Steaks

  1. Mix ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, and pepper.
  2. Form into oval or round patties.
  3. Heat oil in a skillet and cook patties until browned on both sides and cooked through. Remove and set aside.

2. Make the Onion Gravy

  1. In the same pan, melt butter and sauté sliced onions until soft and caramelized.
  2. Stir in flour and cook 1–2 minutes to remove raw taste.
  3. Slowly whisk in beef broth until smooth.
  4. Simmer until gravy thickens, then season with salt, pepper, and optional Worcestershire sauce.

3. Combine and Serve

  • Return the hamburger steaks to the gravy and simmer a few minutes.
  • Serve hot over mashed potatoes, rice, or noodles.

Tips for Best Results

  • Use ground beef with 15–20% fat for juicier patties.
  • Caramelize onions slowly for a rich, sweet gravy.
  • Gravy can be made ahead; just reheat with the patties before serving.
