Ground Beef and Gravy over Mashed Potatoes

Ingredients

Mashed Potatoes

  • 2 lbs potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • Salt
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • ½–¾ cup milk (warm)
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Ground Beef & Gravy

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped (optional)
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced (optional)
  • 2 tbsp butter or oil
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt & pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Make the mashed potatoes
    Boil potatoes in salted water until fork-tender (15–20 minutes).
    Drain, mash with butter and milk, season, and keep warm.
  2. Cook the ground beef
    In a skillet over medium heat, brown ground beef with onion until fully cooked.
    Drain excess grease.
  3. Make the gravy
    Add butter to the skillet, then sprinkle in flour.
    Stir and cook 1 minute.
    Slowly whisk in beef broth and Worcestershire sauce.
  4. Simmer
    Cook 5–7 minutes until thickened.
    Season with salt and pepper.
  5. Serve
    Spoon ground beef and gravy over mashed potatoes.

Easy Variations

  • Creamy gravy: Add a splash of milk or cream.
  • Mushroom gravy: Add sliced mushrooms with the onion.
  • Extra savory: Add a pinch of thyme or onion powder.
  • Casserole style: Top with cheese and bake briefly.
