Grits with butter & sugar and crispy spam

Oh, now we’re talking a classic sweet-and-savory breakfast combo! Here’s a simple way to make grits with butter & sugar paired with crispy Spam:


Ingredients

  • 1 cup grits (quick-cooking or regular)
  • 4 cups water (or 2 cups water + 2 cups milk for creamier grits)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 2–3 tbsp butter
  • 2–3 tsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • 1 can Spam, sliced into 1/4–1/2 inch pieces

Instructions

1. Cook the grits

  1. Bring water (or water + milk) to a boil with salt.
  2. Slowly stir in the grits.
  3. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring occasionally, until thickened:
    • Quick-cooking grits: ~5 minutes
    • Regular grits: ~20–25 minutes
  4. Stir in butter and sugar until melted and well combined. Taste and adjust sweetness.

2. Cook the Spam

  1. Heat a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add Spam slices and cook 3–4 minutes per side, until browned and crispy.

3. Serve

  • Spoon the buttery, sweet grits onto a plate or bowl.
  • Top or serve alongside the crispy Spam.
  • Optional: sprinkle a little black pepper on the grits or drizzle a tiny bit of hot sauce on the Spam for a kick.
