🍫 German Chocolate Cake
German Chocolate Cake is a rich chocolate layer cake filled and topped with a sweet coconut-pecan frosting. Despite the name, it actually comes from the United States, not Germany. The cake was named after Samuel German, an American chocolate maker who created a type of baking chocolate.
Ingredients
For the chocolate cake
- 2 cups flour
- 1¾ cups sugar
- ¾ cup cocoa powder
- 2 eggs 🥚

- ½ cup vegetable oil

- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 cup hot water
- ½ tsp salt
For the coconut-pecan frosting
- 1 cup evaporated milk
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 3 egg yolks
- ½ cup butter 🧈

- 1 cup shredded coconut 🥥
- 1 cup chopped pecans
Instructions
- Preheat oven
Heat oven to 175°C (350°F). - Make the batter
Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix well.
Stir in hot water (batter will be thin). - Bake
Pour into two round cake pans and bake 30–35 minutes. Let cool. - Prepare frosting
In a saucepan combine evaporated milk, brown sugar, egg yolks, and butter.
Cook on medium heat while stirring until thick.
Stir in coconut, pecans, and vanilla. Cool slightly. - Assemble
Spread frosting between the cake layers and on top.
