What Are Egg Rolls?

Egg rolls are a popular Asian-style appetizer: a mixture of vegetables, sometimes meat, wrapped in a thin wheat flour wrapper and fried or baked until crispy.


Classic Ingredients

  • Wrapper: Wheat flour egg roll wrappers
  • Filling: Usually cabbage, carrots, and optionally pork, chicken, or shrimp
  • Seasoning: Soy sauce, garlic, ginger, and sesame oil

Simple Homemade Egg Rolls

Ingredients (basic version, 3–4 items):

  1. Egg roll wrappers
  2. Shredded cabbage & carrots (or mixed coleslaw mix)
  3. Cooked protein (optional: chicken, pork, shrimp, or tofu)
  4. Soy sauce or favorite seasoning

Method:

  1. Prepare filling: Sauté veggies (and protein) in a little oil, season with soy sauce or spices. Let cool slightly.
  2. Assemble: Place 2–3 tablespoons of filling in each wrapper. Fold sides and roll tightly, sealing the edge with water.
  3. Cook:
    • Frying: Heat oil in a pan and fry until golden brown, about 2–3 minutes per side.
    • Baking: Brush with oil and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes, turning halfway.

Tips & Variations

  • For a healthier version, bake instead of frying.
  • Try different fillings: shrimp & snow peas, chicken & broccoli, or even mashed sweet potato & black beans.
  • Serve with soy sauce, sweet chili sauce, or duck sauce.
