Here’s a classic Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast recipe (often called SOS)—simple, comforting, and old-school 🍞🥩


Creamed Chipped Beef on Toast

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1½–2 cups milk (warm)
  • 1 jar or package (4–5 oz) dried chipped beef, rinsed & chopped
  • Black pepper to taste
  • Pinch of paprika (optional)
  • Toasted white or wheat bread

Instructions

  1. Prepare the beef
    Rinse chipped beef briefly under warm water to remove excess salt.
    Pat dry and chop into bite-size pieces.
  2. Make the roux
    Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.
    Stir in flour and cook 1 minute (do not brown).
  3. Make the cream sauce
    Slowly whisk in warm milk.
    Cook, stirring constantly, until thick and smooth.
  4. Add beef & season
    Stir in chipped beef, black pepper, and paprika.
    Simmer 3–5 minutes until heated through.
  5. Serve
    Spoon generously over hot toast.

Tips & Variations

  • Creamier: Add a splash of heavy cream at the end.
  • Extra flavor: Add a pinch of nutmeg or onion powder.
  • Hearty: Serve over biscuits, hash browns, or mashed potatoes.
  • Less salty: Soak beef in water for 10 minutes before rinsing.
