🍌 Cavendish banana

The Cavendish banana is the most common banana sold in supermarkets around the world. It’s the classic bright yellow banana most people eat daily.

🌍 Why It’s So Popular

  • Makes up about 45–50% of global banana production
  • Grown widely in Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia
  • Chosen for its:
    • Sweet taste
    • Long shelf life
    • Ability to withstand shipping

🧬 Quick Facts

  • Originated from Southeast Asia
  • Named after William Cavendish (19th century)
  • Replaced the older Gros Michel banana in the 1950s after disease wiped out much of that crop

πŸ₯— Nutritional Benefits (1 medium banana)

  • ~105 calories
  • High in potassium
  • Good source of vitamin B6
  • Contains fiber for digestion
  • Naturally fat-free and cholesterol-free

⚠️ Disease Concerns

Cavendish bananas are genetically very similar (cloned plants), which makes them vulnerable to diseases like:

  • Panama disease (Tropical Race 4)
  • Black Sigatoka

Scientists are currently working on disease-resistant varieties to protect future supply.

If you’d like, I can also explain how Cavendish bananas ripen (and why they turn brown).
