Bread in a Jar is a fun, old-fashioned baked bread that’s cooked inside glass jars. It’s soft like quick bread or light yeast bread and is popular for gifting, camping, or shelf-stable baking (when properly canned).

Below are the two most common and safe styles people mean by “bread in a jar.”


🍞 Quick Bread in a Jar (No Yeast – Easiest & Safest)

This version is like banana bread or sweet loaf bread.

Ingredients (makes 4–5 pint jars)

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 tsp cinnamon (optional)
  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup oil or melted butter
  • ½ cup milk or buttermilk
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Optional add-ins:

  • Nuts, raisins, chocolate chips, dried fruit

Instructions

  1. Prep Jars
    • Use oven-safe, wide-mouth mason jars
    • Grease jars well
    • Preheat oven to 325°F (165°C)
  2. Mix Batter
    • Whisk dry ingredients.
    • Mix wet ingredients separately.
    • Combine just until blended.
  3. Fill Jars
    • Fill jars ½ full only (important!)
    • Wipe rims clean.
  4. Bake
    • Place jars on a baking sheet.
    • Bake 45–50 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Seal (Optional Gift Method)
    • Immediately place lids on hot jars and screw on rings.
    • As jars cool, lids may seal naturally.

⚠️ Note: Even if sealed, quick bread jars should be refrigerated or frozen unless pressure-canned properly.


🍞 Yeast Bread in a Jar (Soft Dinner-Bread Style)

Ingredients

  • 3 cups bread flour
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2¼ tsp instant yeast
  • 1 cup warm milk
  • 2 tbsp butter, melted

Method

  1. Mix and knead dough.
  2. Let rise once.
  3. Punch down and fill greased jars ⅓ full.
  4. Let rise again until jars are half full.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30–35 minutes.

Best eaten fresh — not shelf-stable.
