Here’s a classic, homemade apple pie recipe with a flaky crust and sweet-spiced filling.


🍏 Classic Apple Pie Recipe

🛒 Ingredients

For the crust (2-crust pie)

  • 2 ½ cups (315 g) all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup (225 g) unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 6–8 tbsp ice water

For the filling

  • 6–7 medium apples (Granny Smith Apple or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ¾ cup (150 g) sugar
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

Optional

  • 1 egg (for egg wash)
  • 1 tbsp sugar (for sprinkling on top)

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare the crust

  1. Mix flour + salt in a bowl.
  2. Cut in chilled butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add ice water until dough forms.
  4. Divide into 2 discs, wrap, and refrigerate at least 1 hour.

2. Prepare the filling

  1. In a large bowl, toss apples with sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla.
  2. Let sit 10 minutes to release juices.

3. Assemble the pie

  1. Roll out one disc of dough and place in a 9-inch pie pan.
  2. Add apple filling evenly.
  3. Roll out second disc and cover the pie.
  4. Crimp edges and cut slits on top to release steam.

4. Egg wash (optional)

  • Brush top with beaten egg
  • Sprinkle 1 tbsp sugar for a golden crust

5. Bake

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C)
  • Bake 45–50 minutes, covering edges with foil if browning too quickly
  • Let cool 2–3 hours for best slicing

🌿 Tips

  • Apple variety: Tart apples like Granny Smith hold shape; sweeter apples like Fuji add natural sweetness
  • Crispier bottom: Bake on a preheated baking sheet
  • Spices: Cinnamon + nutmeg is classic; you can add a pinch of cloves or allspice

🍽️ Serve With

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Whipped cream
  • Caramel drizzle
