🍫 German Chocolate Cake

German Chocolate Cake is a rich chocolate layer cake filled and topped with a sweet coconut-pecan frosting. Despite the name, it actually comes from the United States, not Germany. The cake was named after Samuel German, an American chocolate maker who created a type of baking chocolate.

Ingredients

For the chocolate cake

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1¾ cups sugar
  • ¾ cup cocoa powder
  • 2 eggs 🥚
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup hot water
  • ½ tsp salt

For the coconut-pecan frosting

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 3 egg yolks
  • ½ cup butter 🧈
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 1 cup shredded coconut 🥥
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven
    Heat oven to 175°C (350°F).
  2. Make the batter
Mix flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix well.
Stir in hot water (batter will be thin).
  3. Bake
Pour into two round cake pans and bake 30–35 minutes. Let cool.
  4. Prepare frosting
In a saucepan combine evaporated milk, brown sugar, egg yolks, and butter.
