Classic Steak & Onions
Ingredients
- 1–1½ lb steak (sirloin, ribeye, or strip), sliced or whole
- Salt & black pepper
- 2 large onions, sliced
- 2 tbsp oil
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce (optional but 🔥)
- Optional: garlic, thyme, or a splash of beef broth
Instructions
- Season the steak
Pat dry and season generously with salt and pepper. - Cook the steak
Heat a skillet over high heat with 1 tbsp oil.
Sear steak 3–4 min per side (medium-rare). Remove and rest. - Caramelize the onions
Lower heat to medium. Add remaining oil + butter.
Add onions with a pinch of salt. Cook 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden. - Bring it together
Stir in Worcestershire (and garlic if using).
Slice steak and return it to the pan with the onions. Toss briefly to coat. - Serve hot
Spoon onions over steak and enjoy.
Optional upgrades
- Smothered style: Add ½ cup beef broth and simmer 5 minutes
- Gravy version: Sprinkle 1 tbsp flour over onions, then add broth
- Pepper steak vibes: Add sliced bell peppers at the end
