Here’s a classic Amish Onion Fritters recipe with a fresh Chive Dip—crispy, tender, and perfect as a snack or side 🧅✨


Amish Onion Fritters with Chive Dip

Ingredients

Onion Fritters

  • 2 large sweet onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • ½ tsp salt
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • ¾ cup milk
  • 1 large egg
  • Oil for frying (vegetable or canola)

Chive Dip

  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 2 tbsp mayonnaise
  • 2 tbsp fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • Salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions

Make the Chive Dip

  1. In a small bowl, mix sour cream, mayonnaise, chives, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
  2. Cover and refrigerate while you make the fritters (flavor improves as it chills).

Make the Onion Fritters

  1. Prep Batter
    • In a bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and pepper.
    • In another bowl, whisk milk and egg.
    • Stir wet ingredients into dry until just combined.
  2. Add Onions
    • Fold sliced onions into the batter until well coated.
  3. Fry
    • Heat oil in a deep skillet to 350°F (175°C).
    • Drop spoonfuls of batter into oil, flattening slightly.
    • Fry 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  4. Drain
    • Remove fritters to paper towels.

Serve

  • Serve hot with chilled chive dip on the side.

Tips & Variations

  • Extra crispy: Use buttermilk instead of milk.
  • Savory twist: Add garlic powder or paprika to batter.
  • Cheesy fritters: Add ½ cup shredded cheddar.
  • No chives? Use green onions or dill.
