Haluski

Here’s a classic Haluski recipe—simple, cozy comfort food made with cabbage, onions, butter, and noodles 🧈🥬

Traditional Haluski (Polish / Eastern European Style)

Ingredients

  • 12 oz egg noodles (wide or medium)
  • 1 medium head green cabbage, cored and sliced
  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 6–8 tbsp butter (don’t skimp!)
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Cook the Noodles
    • Boil egg noodles in well-salted water until tender.
    • Drain and set aside.
  2. Cook the Cabbage & Onion
    • Melt butter in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
    • Add sliced onion and cook until soft and lightly golden.
    • Add cabbage, season with salt and pepper.
    • Cook 15–20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is soft and caramelized.
  3. Combine
    • Add cooked noodles to the cabbage mixture.
    • Toss well, adding more butter if needed.
    • Adjust seasoning.
  4. Serve Hot
    • Finish with extra black pepper or a touch more butter.

Popular Variations

  • With bacon: Cook chopped bacon first; use the fat for cabbage.
  • With kielbasa: Brown sliced kielbasa and add at the end.
  • Cheesy: Stir in grated Parmesan or farmer’s cheese.
  • Slovak-style: Serve with a dollop of sour cream.

Tips for Best Flavor

  • Let the cabbage get deeply golden—that’s where the flavor is.
  • Use wide egg noodles for best texture.
  • Taste as you go; cabbage needs salt to shine.

If you want, I can share a one-pan version, slow cooker haluski, or old-world family-style method 😊
