Here’s a classic vanilla custard slice (also called vanilla slice or custard square). It’s creamy, not too hard, and very popular 😊
🍰 Vanilla Custard Slice
Ingredients
Pastry
- 2 sheets frozen puff pastry
Custard filling
- 2 cups (500 ml) milk
- ½ cup sugar
- ½ cup custard powder (or cornstarch + vanilla)
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup thick cream (optional, for extra creaminess)
Icing (optional but classic)
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1–2 tbsp milk or water
- A few drops vanilla
Instructions
- Bake the pastry
- Bake puff pastry sheets according to package instructions until golden.
- Let cool completely. Trim edges if needed.
- Make the custard
- In a bowl, mix custard powder and sugar with a little milk until smooth.
- Heat remaining milk in a saucepan.
- Slowly whisk in the custard mixture.
- Cook on medium heat, stirring constantly, until very thick.
- Remove from heat, stir in vanilla (and cream if using).
- Assemble
- Place one pastry sheet in a lined baking pan.
- Spread hot custard evenly over it.
- Top with second pastry sheet, pressing gently.
- Chill
- Refrigerate for 3–4 hours (or overnight) until set.
- Ice & serve
- Mix icing ingredients and spread on top.
- Cut into squares using a sharp knife.
Tips
- Use a serrated knife for neat cuts.
- For a firmer slice, reduce milk slightly.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar instead of icing if you want it simpler.
