World War II rationing dessert recipe

Posted on March 18, 2026 by Admin

During World War II, sugar, butter, and eggs were scarce, so people created “wartime desserts” using simple ingredients that were available. One classic example is the World War II Rationing Chocolate Cake, which doesn’t require eggs, butter, or milk.

🍰 WWII Rationing Chocolate Cake (Eggless & Milkless)

Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 175°C and grease a cake pan.
  2. Mix dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, salt.
  3. Add wet ingredients: vinegar, oil, vanilla, water. Mix until smooth.
  4. Pour into pan and bake 30–35 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  5. Let cool, then serve plain or dust with cocoa/powdered sugar.

📝 Notes

  • No eggs or milk needed – perfect for ration times.
  • You can replace some sugar with honey or syrup if available.
  • Wartime desserts were often plain but sweet, focusing on stretching scarce ingredients.

If you like, I can also give a WWII-inspired cookie or pudding recipe that uses minimal sugar and butter, just like they did during rationing.
