The school pizza recipe

Posted on January 31, 2026 by Admin

Ahhh, school pizza 😍 — that thick, soft crust, slightly sweet sauce, and melty cheese. Total nostalgia. Here’s a classic school cafeteria–style pizza recipe that tastes shockingly close to the real thing.

The Classic School Pizza Recipe

Ingredients

🍕 Crust (thick & soft)

  • 2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup powdered milk
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 packet (2¼ tsp) active dry yeast
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil

🍅 Sauce (slightly sweet)

  • 1 (6 oz) can tomato paste
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

🧀 Topping

  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Optional: cooked ground beef or pepperoni

Instructions

1. Make the Crust

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water; let sit 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. In a bowl, mix flour, powdered milk, sugar, and salt.
  3. Add yeast mixture and oil. Mix until dough forms.
  4. Press dough into a greased 9×13-inch pan (no rolling—just press).
  5. Cover and let rise 30 minutes.

2. Make the Sauce

Mix all sauce ingredients in a bowl until smooth.

3. Assemble

  1. Preheat oven to 475°F (245°C).
  2. Spread sauce evenly over risen dough.
  3. Sprinkle cheese generously on top.
  4. Add optional meat if using.

4. Bake

Bake 12–15 minutes, until cheese is bubbly and edges are lightly golden.

Why This Tastes Like School Pizza

  • Powdered milk = signature soft crust
  • Press-in pan dough = thick cafeteria base
  • Simple, sweet sauce = exact flavor memory

Optional Authentic Touches

  • Use part-skim low-moisture mozzarella
  • Cut into rectangles, not slices 😉
  • Let cool 5 minutes before serving (very important!)

If you want, I can also give you:

  • Tony’s / Totino’s–style version
  • School breakfast pizza
  • Sheet-pan pizza for a crowd
  • Freezer-friendly cafeteria pizza

Just tell me 🍕😄
