Tennessee onions better than onion rings

Posted on November 2, 2025 by Admin
Ohhh yes 😋 — Tennessee Onions are absolutely a next-level upgrade from onion rings! They’re rich, cheesy, smoky, and buttery — like the comfort food cousin of onion rings that decided to go gourmet.

Here’s a perfect, easy Tennessee Onions recipe 👇

🧅🧀 Tennessee Onions (Cheesy Baked Onions)

🕒 Total Time:

35–40 minutes

🍽 Serves:

4–6

Ingredients

  • 3 large sweet onions (Vidalia or Walla Walla work best)

  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp smoked paprika (for that “BBQ” smoky flavor)

  • 1½ cups shredded cheese (cheddar, mozzarella, or a blend)

  • ¼ cup Parmesan cheese (optional but amazing)

  • Optional: pinch of red pepper flakes or drizzle of BBQ sauce for heat and sweetness

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
Grease or line a 9×13-inch baking dish.

  2. Prep onions

    • Peel onions and slice into ½-inch thick rings.

    • Separate them gently and layer them evenly in the baking dish.

  3. Season

    • Pour melted butter evenly over the onions.

    • Sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and smoked paprika.

  4. Add cheese

    • Top evenly with shredded cheese and Parmesan.

    • (You can do layers: onions → butter → cheese → repeat.)

  5. Bake

    • Cover with foil and bake 25 minutes, then uncover and bake 10–15 minutes more,
until onions are soft and cheese is golden and bubbly.

  6. Serve hot

    • Let cool for a few minutes — then serve as a side or on top of steak, burgers, or BBQ chicken.

💡 Why They’re Better Than Onion Rings:

  • No messy batter or frying — all in one pan.

  • Deep caramelized flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture.

  • The smoky, cheesy crust is irresistible.

  • Pairs perfectly with BBQ or grilled meats.
