stuffed cabbage rolls

Posted on December 5, 2025 by Admin

Ah, stuffed cabbage rolls! Those are hearty, comforting, and surprisingly versatile. They usually consist of cabbage leaves wrapped around a filling of meat and rice (sometimes other grains), then baked or simmered in a flavorful sauce. Here’s a detailed guide:

Classic Stuffed Cabbage Rolls

Ingredients (for ~6–8 rolls):

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 400–500g ground beef, pork, or a mix
  • ½ cup rice (uncooked)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1–2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 egg
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1 can (400g) crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste (optional, for richer flavor)
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1–2 tbsp olive oil

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the cabbage:
    • Bring a large pot of water to boil.
    • Core the cabbage and carefully separate the leaves.
    • Boil leaves for 2–3 minutes until pliable. Drain and cool.
  2. Prepare the filling:
    • In a bowl, combine ground meat, uncooked rice, chopped onion, garlic, egg, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix well.
  3. Assemble the rolls:
    • Lay a cabbage leaf flat. Trim thick vein at base if needed.
    • Place 2–3 tablespoons of filling in the center.
    • Fold sides over filling and roll tightly.
  4. Prepare the sauce:
    • In a baking dish, mix crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, olive oil, sugar, salt, and pepper.
    • Place cabbage rolls seam-side down in the sauce. Spoon some sauce over the top.
  5. Cook:
    • Oven method: Cover with foil and bake at 180°C (350°F) for 45–60 minutes until meat and rice are cooked.
    • Stovetop method: Simmer in a covered pot over low heat for 45–60 minutes.
  6. Serve:
    • With extra sauce, a dollop of sour cream, or fresh herbs like parsley or dill.

💡 Tips:

  • You can use quinoa or bulgur instead of rice for a different texture.
  • For a tangy twist, add a splash of vinegar or lemon juice to the tomato sauce.
  • Leftovers taste even better the next day—the flavors meld beautifully.

If you want, I can also give a mini muffin-tin version of stuffed cabbage rolls, like little bite-sized rolls that are perfect for appetizers. That’s a fun twist!

Do you want me to show that version?
