Spaghetti sauce

Here’s a classic homemade spaghetti sauce—rich, hearty, and slow-simmered for deep flavor 🍝
This is a versatile base you can customize with meat, veggies, or keep it simple.


Classic Spaghetti Sauce

Ingredients

  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes
  • 1 can (14 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tsp sugar (optional, to balance acidity)
  • 1 tsp dried basil
  • 1 tsp dried oregano
  • ½ tsp dried thyme
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt & black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Sauté aromatics
    Heat olive oil over medium heat.
    Cook onion 4–5 minutes until soft.
    Add garlic and cook 30 seconds until fragrant.
  2. Build the sauce
    Stir in tomato paste and cook 1 minute.
    Add crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, sugar, and seasonings.
  3. Simmer
    Bring to a gentle simmer.
    Reduce heat to low and cook 30–60 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Finish
    Taste and adjust seasoning.
    Serve over cooked spaghetti.

Popular Variations

  • Meat sauce: Add browned ground beef, Italian sausage, or meatballs
  • Marinara: Skip tomato sauce and paste; use crushed tomatoes only
  • Vegetable: Add mushrooms, bell peppers, or zucchini
  • Creamy: Stir in a splash of heavy cream at the end
