Say less 😌🍑 Here’s a classic Southern Peach Cobbler—buttery, bubbly, and unapologetically comforting.
Southern Peach Cobbler (Old-School Style)
Ingredients
For the peaches
- 6–8 fresh peaches, peeled & sliced (or ~5 cups)
(Frozen works too—thaw first) - ¾ cup sugar
- ¼ cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- ¼ tsp nutmeg (optional but very Southern)
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tbsp lemon juice
- 2 tsp cornstarch
For the batter
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¾ cup milk
- ½ cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Put the butter in a 9×13 baking dish and melt it in the oven. Leave it there.
- Mix peaches with sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Set aside.
- Make batter: Whisk flour, sugar, baking powder, salt, and milk until smooth.
- Pour batter directly over the melted butter.
👉 Do not stir. - Spoon peaches (and juices) evenly over the batter.
👉 Again: do not stir. - Bake 40–45 minutes, until golden brown and bubbly.
- Let it cool slightly… then serve warm.
Serving (this is important)
- Vanilla ice cream 🧊🍨 (mandatory)
- Or whipped cream if you’re being polite
If you want:
- Extra crispy edges
- Biscuit-topped version
- Grandma-style with canned peaches
- Or a small-batch skillet cobbler
