Shepherd’s pie

Posted on March 18, 2026 by Admin

Shepherd’s pie is a classic comfort dish made with a savory minced meat filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes, then baked until golden.

🥧 What makes it “Shepherd’s” pie?

  • Traditionally made with lamb (shepherds herd sheep 🐑)
  • If made with beef, it’s actually called Cottage Pie

🧾 Ingredients

Filling

  • 500g minced lamb
  • 1 onion (chopped)
  • 2 carrots (diced)
  • 1 cup peas
  • 1–2 tbsp tomato paste
  • Salt, pepper, herbs (thyme/rosemary)

Topping

  • 3–4 potatoes (boiled & mashed)
  • Butter + milk (for creaminess)

👩‍🍳 How to Make

  1. Cook the filling
Fry onions and carrots, add lamb, cook until browned
Add peas, tomato paste, seasoning, and cook a few minutes
  2. Prepare mashed potatoes
Mash boiled potatoes with butter, milk, and salt
  3. Assemble
Spread meat mixture in a baking dish
Cover with mashed potatoes (smooth or textured top)
  4. Bake
Bake at 180–200°C for 20–30 minutes until golden on top

😋 Taste & Texture

  • Rich, savory meat base
  • Soft, creamy potato topping
  • Slight crisp on top after baking

🍽️ Variations

  • Add cheese on top for extra flavor
  • Use chicken instead of lamb
  • Add spices for a desi-style twist

🧠 Fun Fact

This dish became popular in the UK as a way to use leftover roasted meat, making it both economical and delicious.

If you want, I can give you a quick stovetop (no-oven) version or a spicy Pakistani-style shepherd’s pie.
