🥧 Shepherd’s Pie
Shepherd’s pie is a hearty, savory dish made with ground meat, vegetables, and a mashed potato topping, baked until golden and bubbly. Traditionally, it’s made with lamb, while beef versions are often called “cottage pie.”
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground lamb (or beef for cottage pie)
- 1 onion, chopped
- 2 carrots, diced
- 1 cup peas (or mixed vegetables)
- 2–3 cups Mashed potatoes
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1–2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and Black pepper to taste
Optional: beef or lamb broth to moisten the filling
How to Make Shepherd’s Pie
1. Cook the filling
Sauté onions and carrots until soft. Add ground meat and cook until browned. Stir in peas and Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper. Add a little broth if the mixture is too dry.
2. Prepare mashed potatoes
Boil potatoes until tender, then mash with butter, milk, salt, and pepper.
3. Assemble the pie
Spread the meat and vegetable mixture in a baking dish. Top with mashed potatoes, spreading evenly and creating ridges with a fork for browning.
4. Bake
Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20–30 minutes until the potato topping is golden.
Tips
- Use fresh herbs like thyme or parsley for extra flavor.
- For a cheesy twist, sprinkle shredded cheese on top before baking.
- Let the pie rest for a few minutes before serving to set the layers.
Serving Ideas
- Serve with a side salad or steamed vegetables.
- Great with gravy or a drizzle of au jus.
✅ Fun Fact: Shepherd’s pie originated in the United Kingdom as a way to use leftover roasted meat topped with mashed potatoes.
