Salisbury steak

Posted on November 14, 2025February 6, 2026 by Admin

Salisbury Steak is a comforting, classic American dish that’s hearty, savory, and simple to make. It’s often served with a rich, flavorful gravy and paired with mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables. The “steak” itself is made from ground beef, shaped into patties, and seared, then simmered in a savory brown gravy to keep the meat tender and flavorful. It’s a perfect weeknight dinner that feels like home.

Here’s a recipe for making Salisbury Steak:

🍽️ Salisbury Steak

Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

For the Salisbury Steaks:

  • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean works best)
  • 1/4 cup breadcrumbs (or crushed crackers for extra flavor)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional for extra flavor)
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil (for frying)

For the Gravy:

  • 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 1 small onion, sliced thinly
  • 2 cups beef broth (low-sodium if preferred)
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp soy sauce (optional, adds depth of flavor)
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (for thickening)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste

Instructions

1. Make the Salisbury Steaks:

  • In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, milk, onion, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard (if using), salt, pepper, and smoked paprika. Use your hands or a spoon to mix until everything is just combined. Don’t overmix, as it can make the steaks tough.
  • Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape each portion into a patty, pressing gently to flatten slightly. Set aside.

2. Cook the Steaks:

  • Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat.
  • Once the oil is hot, add the patties to the pan and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, until they are nicely browned on the outside. Don’t worry if they’re not fully cooked through yet. They will finish cooking in the gravy.
  • Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside on a plate.

3. Make the Gravy:

  • In the same skillet, reduce the heat to medium and melt the butter.
  • Add the sliced onions and sauté, stirring occasionally, for 4-5 minutes until softened and golden brown.
  • Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for another 1-2 minutes, stirring constantly, to create a roux (this thickens the gravy).
  • Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly to avoid lumps. Stir in the Worcestershire sauce and soy sauce (if using). Bring to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes until the gravy begins to thicken.
  • Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.

4. Finish Cooking the Steaks:

  • Return the browned patties to the skillet, spooning some of the gravy over the top. Cover the skillet and simmer over low heat for 10-15 minutes, until the patties are fully cooked through and the flavors meld together. The internal temperature of the patties should reach 160°F (71°C).

5. Serve:

  • Serve the Salisbury steaks with plenty of gravy spooned over the top.
  • They’re fantastic served with mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables, or even rice to soak up that delicious gravy.

Tips:

  • Make Ahead: You can prepare the patties in advance and store them in the fridge for up to a day. This makes the recipe even quicker when you’re ready to cook.
  • Add Mushrooms: If you love mushrooms, add sliced mushrooms to the gravy for extra flavor. Sauté them with the onions in step 3.
  • Spicy Version: If you want a little heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper or a dash of hot sauce to the gravy.
  • Alternative to Ground Beef: For a leaner version, use ground turkey or chicken for the patties, though the flavor and texture will be slightly different.

Serving Suggestions:

  • Mashed Potatoes are the classic pairing for Salisbury steak, but you can also serve it over rice, buttered noodles, or baked potatoes.
  • For a side of vegetables, try green beans, corn on the cob, or a simple side salad to balance the richness of the gravy.

This Salisbury Steak recipe is simple, flavorful, and feels like a cozy, comforting meal. The savory gravy really makes the dish, and the patties are juicy and tender. It’s perfect for a family dinner or when you’re in the mood for a hearty meal that’s easy to make.

Would you add anything special to the gravy, or stick with the classic recipe? Let me know if you’d like any more variations!
