Putting an empty plastic bottle in the washing machine

Posted on March 17, 2026 by Admin

🧼 Putting an Empty Plastic Bottle in the Washing Machine

Running an empty plastic bottle in the washing machine is not recommended, and here’s why:

⚠️ Risks

  1. Noise & vibration – Empty bottles can bang around, hitting the drum or other clothes, which can damage the machine or clothes.
  2. Damage to the bottle – The plastic can crack or deform under agitation and heat.
  3. Clogging or debris – Caps left on can trap water and cause splashes or uneven spinning.

âś… Safe Alternatives

  • Hand wash the bottle – Use warm soapy water and a bottle brush
  • Dishwasher-safe bottles – Only put bottles labeled “dishwasher safe” in the dishwasher, not the washing machine
  • Remove caps – Always remove the lid if you must rinse in a machine or dishwasher

đź’ˇ Tip

If your goal is recycling or disinfecting bottles, soaking in hot soapy water or using a bottle sanitizer is much safer and effective than running them in the washing machine.

I can also give you a quick method to safely clean plastic bottles at home without damage if you want.
