⭐ Ingredients (Serves 4)

For the Wontons

  • 1 lb ground pork
  • 2 green onions, finely chopped
  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar (optional but great)
  • 1 tsp grated ginger
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • Β½ tsp salt
  • ΒΌ tsp black pepper
  • 1 egg (optional β€” helps bind)
  • 1 pack wonton wrappers

For the Broth

  • 6 cups chicken broth
  • 1–2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp rice vinegar or mirin
  • 1-inch piece ginger, sliced
  • 2–3 green onions, cut into 2-inch pieces
  • Optional add-ins:
    • Mushrooms
    • Baby bok choy
    • Spinach
    • Thinly sliced carrots

For Serving

  • Extra green onions
  • Chili crisp or chili oil
  • Sesame seeds

1. Make the filling

In a bowl, combine:

  • Ground pork
  • Green onions
  • Soy sauce
  • Sesame oil
  • Vinegar
  • Ginger
  • Garlic
  • Salt & pepper
  • Egg (optional)

Mix gently until well combined.


2. Wrap the wontons

  1. Place 1–2 teaspoons of filling in the center of each wrapper.
  2. Dip your finger in water and wet the edges.
  3. Fold into a triangle, pressing to seal.
  4. Bring the two opposite corners together and pinch to seal (optional traditional shape).

Tip: Keep wrappers covered with a damp towel so they don’t dry out.


3. Make the broth

  1. In a pot, bring chicken broth to a simmer.
  2. Add soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger slices, green onion pieces, and vinegar.
  3. Let gently simmer 10 minutes for flavor.
  4. Remove ginger and onion pieces if desired.

4. Cook the wontons

  • Add fresh wontons directly to the broth.
  • Cook 3–5 minutes until they float and pork is fully cooked.
  • Add bok choy or spinach during the last 1–2 minutes if using.

5. Serve

Ladle soup into bowls with:

  • Extra green onions
  • A drizzle of chili oil
  • Sesame seeds

Freeze for later

  • Make extra wontons and freeze them on a tray.
  • Once frozen, store in a bag β€” cook straight from frozen (add 2 minutes).

Extra Flavor Boost

Add to broth:

  • 1 tbsp miso paste
  • A splash of fish sauce
  • Garlic chili sauce

Other Fillings

Swap pork with:

  • Shrimp or pork/shrimp combo
  • Ground chicken
