philly cheesesteak

Posted on November 7, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a classic Philly Cheesesteak recipe β€” thin-sliced beef, melty cheese, and caramelized onions all tucked into a warm hoagie roll. πŸ₯–πŸ§€ It’s quick, hearty, and so satisfying!

πŸ₯© Ingredients (Serves 4)

  • 1 lb (450 g) ribeye steak (or sirloin, thinly sliced)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil or butter
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional β€” not traditional, but popular)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices provolone cheese (or Cheez Whiz, or white American cheese β€” depending on your preference)
  • 4 hoagie rolls or soft sandwich rolls

πŸ”ͺ Instructions

  1. Prep the steak:
    • Place steak in the freezer for 30–45 minutes β€” this makes it easier to slice thinly.
    • Slice as thin as possible against the grain.
  2. Cook onions (and peppers, if using):
    • Heat 1 tablespoon oil or butter in a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
    • Add onions (and peppers) and cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden brown.
    • Transfer to a bowl and keep warm.
  3. Cook the steak:
    • Add the remaining oil or butter to the pan.
    • Increase heat to medium-high.
    • Add steak in an even layer; season with salt and pepper.
    • Sear for 2–3 minutes, stirring and chopping with a spatula until browned and cooked through.
  4. Combine:
    • Return onions (and peppers) to the skillet and mix with the steak.
    • Lay cheese slices over the mixture and let melt (about 30 seconds).
    • Mix everything together once the cheese is gooey and coats the meat.
  5. Assemble sandwiches:
    • Split hoagie rolls and lightly toast if desired.
    • Pile the hot, cheesy steak mixture into each roll.
    • Serve immediately while hot and melty!

πŸ§€ Cheese Options

  • Provolone: classic, mild, melty
  • White American cheese: smooth and creamy
  • Cheez Whiz: authentic to many Philly shops β€” pour it right on top!

πŸ’‘ Tips

  • Ribeye gives the most flavor and tenderness, but sirloin or flank steak work too.
  • Don’t overcook the steak β€” keep it juicy!
  • Add mushrooms for a twist, or top with a drizzle of hot sauce for extra kick.
