Peanut Butter Earthquake Cake

Posted on November 18, 2025 by Admin

Here it is — a rich, gooey, peanut-butter twist on the classic “earthquake cake,” full of swirls, pockets of molten peanut butter, chocolate, and creamy sweet filling. It looks messy, it bakes messy, and it tastes insane.

🥜🍫 Peanut Butter Earthquake Cake

Ingredients

Cake layer

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients on the box: usually eggs, oil, and water)
  • OR use homemade chocolate cake batter if you prefer

Peanut butter layer

  • 1 cup peanut butter (creamy works best)
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

“Earthquake” swirl layer

  • 1 cup chocolate chips (or peanut butter chips)
  • ½ cup chopped peanut butter cups (optional but amazing)
  • ½ cup chopped peanuts (optional)

Creamy sweet swirl

  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • ½ cup (1 stick) butter, melted
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

⭐ Instructions

1. Prep

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease a 9×13-inch baking pan.

2. Make the chocolate cake layer

  1. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to package directions.
  2. Pour the batter into the pan.

3. Make the peanut butter mixture

In a bowl, blend:

  • peanut butter
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • vanilla

Dollop heaping spoonfuls all over the chocolate batter.

4. Make the cream cheese swirl

In another bowl, mix:

  • 8 oz cream cheese
  • ½ cup melted butter
  • 3 cups powdered sugar
  • vanilla

Drop spoonfuls over the batter as well.

5. Add mix-ins

Sprinkle evenly:

  • chocolate chips
  • peanut butter cups
  • peanuts (optional)

6. Swirl & bake

  1. Use a knife to gently swirl everything — don’t overmix, you want ribbons of peanut butter and cream cheese.
  2. Bake 40–50 minutes.
    • The center will be gooey (that’s normal — it’s an earthquake cake!).
    • Edges will be set and crackly.

7. Cool slightly

Let it set for at least 20 minutes before cutting.
It stays gooey in the middle, like hot fudge meets peanut butter cheesecake.

⭐ Tips

  • Serve warm with vanilla ice cream for maximum indulgence.
  • For extra peanut butter punch, drizzle warmed peanut butter over the top.
  • You can swap the chocolate cake for yellow cake or peanut butter cake.
