Here’s a classic Patty Melt recipe β€” a delicious cross between a burger and a grilled cheese sandwich! πŸ§€πŸ”

Patty Melt

Servings: 2

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) ground beef

  • Salt and pepper, to taste

  • 4 slices rye bread

  • 4 slices Swiss cheese (or cheddar)

  • 1 onion, thinly sliced

  • 2–3 tbsp butter

  • Optional: 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Instructions:

  1. Cook the onions:

    • In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tbsp butter.

    • Add sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized (about 8–10 minutes).

    • Remove from pan and set aside.

  2. Form and cook the patties:

    • Divide the ground beef into 2 equal portions and shape into thin patties slightly larger than your bread slices.

    • Season with salt and pepper (and Worcestershire sauce if using).

    • In the same skillet, cook patties 3–4 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.

  3. Assemble the sandwich:

    • Butter one side of each bread slice.

    • On the unbuttered side, layer: slice of cheese β†’ cooked patty β†’ caramelized onions β†’ slice of cheese β†’ top bread slice (buttered side out).

  4. Grill the sandwich:

    • Heat skillet over medium heat.

    • Cook the sandwich 3–4 minutes per side, pressing lightly, until bread is golden brown and cheese is melted.

  5. Serve:

    • Slice in half and enjoy hot! Perfect with pickles or fries.

Tips & Variations:

  • πŸ§… Extra flavor: Add sautΓ©ed mushrooms with the onions.

  • πŸ§„ Garlic butter: Mix minced garlic into the butter for extra punch.

  • πŸ₯“ Bacon twist: Add crispy bacon slices between the patty and cheese.

  • πŸ«“ Bread choice: Rye is classic, but sourdough or pumpernickel works too.

I can also give a quick skillet-only version that makes patty melts in under 10 minutes if you’re short on time. Do you want that version?
