Ingredients

  • 4–6 sausages (pork, beef, or chicken)

  • 2 medium onions, thinly sliced

  • 1/2 tsp salt, to taste

  • 1/4 tsp black pepper

  • 1/4 cup (60 ml) water or stock (for braising, optional)


Instructions

1. Caramelize the onions

  • Heat butter or oil in a large skillet over medium heat.

  • Add sliced onions, salt, and pepper.

  • Cook, stirring occasionally, until golden and soft, about 10–12 minutes.

  • Optional: Add smoked paprika or herbs for extra flavor.


2. Cook the sausages

  • Push onions to the side and add sausages to the pan.

  • Brown sausages on all sides over medium heat, 5–7 minutes.


3. Simmer together

  • Optional: Add 1/4 cup water or stock, cover, and simmer 5–10 minutes until sausages are fully cooked through (internal temperature 160Β°F / 71Β°C for pork).

  • Stir occasionally so onions coat the sausages.


4. Serve

  • Serve sausages topped with caramelized onions.

  • Great with mashed potatoes, in a bun, or alongside roasted vegetables.
