Yum — Monterey Sausage Pie is a hearty, cheesy egg-and-sausage bake that’s perfect for breakfast, brunch, or even dinner! 🥧🌭🧀

Here’s the classic recipe that’s been loved for years (sometimes called Monterey Sausage Egg Bake):

🥧 Monterey Sausage Pie

Serves: 6–8
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 35–40 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) pork sausage (mild or spicy, depending on preference)
  • 1 small onion, chopped
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded Monterey Jack cheese (or a mix of Jack and cheddar)
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven:
    • Set to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook sausage:
    • In a skillet, cook sausage and onion over medium heat until sausage is browned and crumbly.
    • Drain well and set aside to cool slightly.
  3. Prepare the base:
    • Spread the cooked sausage mixture evenly into a greased 9-inch pie plate or a small baking dish.
    • Sprinkle the shredded cheese evenly over the sausage.
  4. Make the egg mixture:
    • In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, eggs, and milk until smooth (you can also blend this for an ultra-smooth texture).
  5. Assemble and bake:
    • Pour the egg mixture evenly over the sausage and cheese.
    • Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the center is set and the top is golden.
    • A knife inserted in the center should come out clean.
  6. Serve:
    • Let it cool for 5 minutes before slicing.
    • Serve warm — great with a side salad or fresh fruit!

Optional Add-Ins

  • 1/2 cup chopped bell peppers for color
  • 1 small can (4 oz) diced green chilies for a Southwestern twist
  • Substitute turkey sausage or plant-based sausage for a lighter option
