Hot ham and cheese sandwich

Here’s a classic hot ham and cheese sandwich—simple, melty, and comforting 😋

Ingredients (1 sandwich)

  • 2 slices bread (white, sourdough, rye, or brioche)
  • 2–4 slices ham
  • 1–2 slices cheese (Swiss, cheddar, provolone, or American)
  • Butter or mayo (for the bread)

Basic Stovetop Method

  1. Butter the bread on the outside (or use mayo for extra browning).
  2. Layer ham and cheese between the slices.
  3. Heat a skillet over medium.
  4. Cook 2–3 minutes per side, pressing gently, until golden brown and the cheese is melted.
  5. Rest 30 seconds, slice, and serve.

Oven / Broiler Method (great for multiple sandwiches)

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F / 190°C.
  2. Assemble sandwiches (butter optional).
  3. Bake on a sheet pan for 10–12 minutes, flipping once, or broil briefly to toast the top.

Easy Upgrades

  • Dijon or honey mustard inside
  • Pickles or tomato slices
  • Pineapple for a Hawaiian twist
  • Croissant or pretzel bun instead of bread
