Here’s a Giant Muffuletta (Muffaletta) Italian Sandwich recipe — perfect for parties, game day, or feeding a crowd. This stays true to the classic New Orleans version but easy to make at home.

🥪 Giant Muffuletta Italian Sandwich

What You Need

Bread

  • 1 large round loaf of Italian bread, Sicilian loaf, or focaccia
(Traditionally a 10–12 inch round muffuletta loaf)

Olive Salad (the star!)

  • 1 cup green olives, chopped
  • ½ cup black olives, chopped
  • ¼ cup roasted red peppers, chopped
  • ¼ cup pickled cauliflower/giardiniera, chopped
  • 2–3 tbsp capers (optional)
  • 2–4 cloves garlic, minced
  • ¼ cup parsley, chopped
  • ¼–⅓ cup olive oil
  • 1–2 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • ½ tsp oregano
  • Black pepper to taste

Meats & Cheeses

(Amounts can vary, but layer generously)

  • 8 oz sliced mortadella
  • 8 oz sliced salami or Genoa salami
  • 8 oz sliced capicola or ham
  • 8 oz sliced provolone
  • 8 oz sliced mozzarella

⭐ How to Make It

1. Make the Olive Salad

Mix everything in a bowl: chopped olives, peppers, giardiniera, garlic, herbs, oil, vinegar, and pepper.
Let it marinate 30 minutes to overnight (the longer the better).

2. Prepare the Bread

  • Slice the round loaf horizontally.
  • Hollow out a little of the inside (optional but gives more room for fillings).
  • Brush both cut sides lightly with olive oil or the olive salad juices to prevent sogginess.

3. Layer the Sandwich

In this order:

  1. Generous layer of olive salad on the bottom
  2. Provolone
  3. Mortadella
  4. Salami
  5. Ham or capicola
  6. Mozzarella
  7. Another layer of olive salad
  8. Add top of bread

(Press down firmly to pack everything.)

4. Wrap & Rest

Wrap tightly in plastic wrap or foil.
Press under a heavy pan or weight and chill at least 1 hour, preferably 2–4 hours.
This is how it becomes a true muffuletta — the flavors meld and the olive oil soaks into the bread.

5. Slice

Cut into large wedges (like a cake). Serve cold or room temperature.

⭐ Tips & Variations

Classic New Orleans Style

  • Use Sicilian sesame loaf if you can find it.
  • Keep lots of oil in the olive salad — it’s supposed to be juicy.

Spicy Version

Add spicy giardiniera, crushed red pepper, or spicy capicola.

Lighter Version

Use turkey + lighter cheeses + extra veggies.

Party Platter Mini Muffulettas

Make smaller versions using ciabatta rolls or slider buns.
