Here’s a classic, rich chocolate cake that’s moist, deeply chocolatey, and easy to make—perfect for any occasion 🍫🍰


Classic Homemade Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

Cake

  • 1¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1½ cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 1½ tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup milk (or buttermilk for extra moisture)
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee or hot water (enhances chocolate flavor)

Chocolate Frosting (Optional but recommended)

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3½ cups powdered sugar
  • ½ cup cocoa powder
  • ¼ cup milk or cream
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

1. Prep

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour two 9-inch round pans (or one 9×13-inch pan).

2. Mix dry ingredients

  • In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3. Add wet ingredients

  • Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until smooth.

4. Add hot liquid

  • Slowly stir in hot coffee or water. Batter will be thin—this is normal.

5. Bake

  • Pour batter into pans.
  • Bake 30–35 minutes (9×13) or 25–30 minutes (round pans).
  • Toothpick inserted should come out clean.

6. Cool & frost

  • Cool in pans 10 minutes, then turn out onto racks.
  • Frost once completely cooled.

Frosting Instructions

  1. Beat butter until fluffy.
  2. Add cocoa powder and powdered sugar gradually.
  3. Mix in milk and vanilla until smooth and spreadable.

  • Coffee doesn’t make it taste like coffee—it makes it taste more chocolatey.
  • Use room-temperature eggs for a smoother batter.
  • Add chocolate chips to the batter for extra richness.
