Cheese and potato bread

Posted on December 1, 2025 by Admin

Here’s a hearty, comforting Cheese and Potato Bread recipe — soft, cheesy, and perfect as a side or snack. The mashed potatoes make the bread tender and moist, while the cheese adds rich flavor.

🥖 Cheese and Potato Bread

⭐ Ingredients (makes 1 loaf)

Bread

  • 1 cup mashed potatoes (about 1 medium potato, peeled and boiled)
  • ½ cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)
  • 2 ¼ tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 2 tbsp butter, softened
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 3–3 ½ cups all-purpose flour

Cheese

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (or your favorite melting cheese)
  • Optional: ½ cup grated Parmesan for topping

👩‍🍳 Instructions

1. Prepare the yeast

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast.
  2. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Make the dough

  1. In a large bowl, mix mashed potatoes, butter, salt, egg, and the yeast mixture.
  2. Gradually add flour until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
  3. Knead on a floured surface 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.

3. First rise

  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise 1–1.5 hours, until doubled.

4. Add cheese

  • Gently knead in shredded cheese, keeping some for topping if desired.

5. Shape and second rise

  • Shape dough into a loaf and place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan.
  • Cover and let rise 30–40 minutes, until puffy.

6. Bake

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Optional: sprinkle remaining cheese on top.
  • Bake 30–35 minutes, until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped.

7. Cool and serve

  • Let cool 10–15 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve warm or at room temperature.

⭐ Tips & Variations

  • Extra cheesy: Fold in ½ cup shredded cheese into the dough and sprinkle ½ cup on top.
  • Garlic and herbs: Add 1 tsp garlic powder and 1 tsp dried herbs (thyme, rosemary, or parsley) for savory flavor.
  • Potato substitutes: Use instant mashed potatoes if short on time (adjust liquid).
  • Make rolls: Divide dough into small rolls instead of a loaf; bake 20–25 minutes.

If you want, I can also give you a quick no-yeast version or a crispy cheesy breadsticks version.
