Makes: 12–16 sticks
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Rising Time: 1 hour
Bake Time: 12–15 minutes
Ingredients
-
2 ¼ tsp (1 packet) active dry yeast
-
1 cup (240 ml) warm water (105–110°F / 40–43°C)
-
2 tbsp sugar
-
3 cups (375 g) all-purpose flour
-
1 tsp salt
-
2 tbsp olive oil
-
Toppings (optional): melted butter, garlic powder, sea salt, shredded Parmesan, herbs
Instructions
1. Activate the yeast
-
In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast.
-
Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
2. Make the dough
-
In a large bowl, combine flour and salt.
-
Add yeast mixture and olive oil.
-
Mix until a dough forms, then knead 6–8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
-
If too sticky, add a little flour, 1 tbsp at a time.
3. First rise
-
Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a clean towel, and let rise about 1 hour, until doubled in size.
4. Shape the breadsticks
-
Punch down the dough and divide into 12–16 pieces.
-
Roll each piece into a stick, about 6–8 inches long.
-
Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
5. Second rise
-
Cover loosely with a towel and let rise 15–20 minutes until slightly puffy.
6. Bake
-
Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).
-
Optional: brush with melted butter and sprinkle with garlic, Parmesan, or herbs.
-
Bake 12–15 minutes until golden brown.
7. Serve
-
Brush again with butter if desired.
-
Serve warm with marinara, olive oil, or as a side for pasta and soups.
💡 Tips
-
Crispier exterior: Bake a few minutes longer or brush with olive oil instead of butter.
-
Flavor variations: Add rosemary, thyme, or sesame seeds to the dough.
-
Cheesy breadsticks: Sprinkle shredded mozzarella or cheddar before baking.
If you want, I can also give a garlic Parmesan pull-apart breadstick version, which is soft, cheesy, and insanely addictive. Do you want that?
